Physiologically, sleep paralysis is closely related to the paralysis that occurs as a natural part of REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, which is known as REM atonia. Sleep paralysis occurs when the brain awakes from a REM state, but the body paralysis persists. This leaves the person fully conscious, but unable to move. The paralysis can last from several seconds to several minutes "after which the individual may experience panic symptoms and the realization that the distorted perceptions were false".[5] As the correlation with REM sleep suggests, the paralysis is not entirely complete; use of EOG traces shows that eye movement can be instigated during such episodes.[6] When there is an absence of narcolepsy, sleep paralysis is referred to as isolated sleep paralysis (ISP).[7]

The other night, I had a really funky nightmare. Like there's was nothing scary, per se. No monsters, no falling, no death... everything was just WEIRD. I can very vividly remember the thing that woke me up, and it was a picture of a piece of cake and it said "It's Waiting For You"
Video game nerds need only the attached picture to explain why cake was in my subconscious
Anyways, it's not weird that I woke up from something stupid I dreamt about. What's weird is that I woke up in a body I could not control
My eyes opened, and I was able to move them around the room, but I tried to life my arm and nothing happened. Every sensation in my body FELT as if I was moving my arm, but it didn't respond. It felt like it was asleep x 50, so I figured it was just really asleep. Then I tried to roll over, and I realized I couldn't move anything.
I even tried opening my mouth to call for Jen (she had left the bathroom light on, so I thought she was home still), nothing. For what I have to believe was a solid 60 seconds, it was probably the most terrifying sensation I've ever had.
So has anyone else had this happen to them?

Totally anxious to see if this has ever happened to anyone else. It's happened to me 4 or 5 times and just like you said...terrifying. |

I have it happen now and then. I don't find it terrifying so much as curious. I'm deeply inquisitive and anything that separates my sensory perception and my motor control has my immediate interest. I actually deconstruct my thoughts and dreams in my head and try to figure out how I got myself all contorted and knotted up inside, and either get it worked out, or it wears off.
I think it's a weird and fun thing to experience, like when you're partially asleep, almost fully out, and you suddenly experience a falling sensation, snap fully awake, and the mattress is still bucking, and your heart is beating at a thousand miles a minute. |

This has been happening to me on and off since I was about 12. It happened very frequently when I was in college and had an irregular sleep schedule. I can pretty much be guaranteed an episode if I take a nap on the couch with the lights on. You're right. It is terrifying. Most times you feel like you cant swallow or control your throat muscles causing fear of suffocation. On the upside, if you just give in and accept that you dont have control, you can let yourself go back to sleep and direct your dreams. I usually imagine I'm flying. It works most of the time. |

In this recent ranking of the happiest US states, it seems that Indiana is ranked 47 overall. Only Michigan (no surprise), New Jersey (the armpit of america), Connecticut (where?) and New York (cabbies are surprisingly sad) ranked worse than we did.
Oddly, Louisiana is ranked the happiest state. Maybe it's because of all the new beach front property. Ouch... sorry

We're planning our New Year's Eve Platinum Party and one of the coolest things about it is that we're going to be giving out free 8" x 10" photos in front of this giant ornate clock centerpiece, kind of like prom photos. If anyone is like me, I took TERRIBLE prom photos back in the day. No, I won't be showing anyone those, but I did want to share some hilarious ones I found.
Hopefully ours don't turn out as bad as these. Thank you, internet.

I found this article on eHow.com and thought everyone in Indiana needed it.

So it is snowing outside and you may be one of the unlucky one's who have to go to work. Amazingly, living in Virginia would make people think that we have some idea of how to properly drive in such weather. The truth is that people are terrible drivers and literally freak out when there is 1 millimeter of snow on the ground. Here is common sense advice on how NOT to drive in snow and rain.
Step 1 - The first is to not clean your car properly. That means that you will leave snow everywhere and just scrape a little circle on the driver's side so you can see just right in front of you. Do not clean the whole window including the back windows and side mirrors. Best of all though leave all the snow on top of your car so that when you are driving, large amounts of packed snow can fall on other cars and possibly cause them to wreck.
Step 2 - The next thing you want to do in order to cause an accident is to hit the break lots of times and really hard. Don't tap the breaks lightly or try to avoid hitting them at all which is what safe drivers do, you want to make sure to skid past the red light and run into the car in front of you. In addition, go really fast and fly into a ditch.
Step 3 - Remember that you own an SUV; therefore, you are KING OF THE ROAD and nothing can stop you. Go ahead and speed, making sure to change lots of lanes which increases your chance of an accident much more likely. Follow other cars very closely and drive aggressively. Hey, it's not your fault other cars did not get anti-lock breaks or 4WD!
Step 4 - If you follow these DO NOT's in bad weather, I can almost guarantee that you will increase your chances of possibly killing yourself and other's.
It's going to be a looooooooong winter. Sigh
