Full disclosure; I was pretty much born and raised in the Mushroom Kingdom so my opinion on Mario is what Fox News would refer to as, “Fair and Balanced,” and what everyone else would refer to as, “completely one-sided.”
Making his Wii side scrolling debut, Mario is back in an adventure to save Princess Peach. For the first time in the Mario universe, up to 4 players can join in the excitement and play at the same time.
If you played New Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo DS, you know what fun you are in store for.
Mario, Luigi and their Toad buddies 8 new worlds to explore with a secret 9th world I'm not awesome enough to unlock yet.
The part I was the most excited about is this is the first time since 'Super Mario World' the Koopa Kids are back as mini bosses.
All of your traditional power ups are here... mushrooms, fire flowers, and stars. New powers include Ice flowers, A Penguin Suit and a Propeller Suit. This game also mark the first time on the Wii that Yoshi is along ride to help you on your journey.
This game can become insanely difficult at times. I have seen many people curse at the TV and refuse to continue playing. Nintendo gives you the option after 8 tries to play the level for you, but more than anything I see it as a slap in the face.
With 4 players at a time, it is never the same game twice. You can play the story line or play a series of multiplayer battles. This is one of the best games to play as a group or alone. Either way you are guaranteed to have a blast.
There are lots of secret level to keep you playing and guessing.
Overall, I cant suggest a better game than this. If you have a Nintendo Wii, this game is a must have. If you do not have a Nintendo Wii, this game is the reason to buy one.
For me, when a Mario game comes out, its like a catching up with an old friend. Having said that, this is one of our best visits yet.
I figured your assessment would be either ridiculously harsh or you'd give any crap a pass because it's all still Mario but it absolutely looks like a lot of fun either way.
Yeah, my opinion here should be taken lightly. It's no secret I'm obsessed with Mario. But if you liked the good old days of Super Mario 3, then this is the game you've been waiting for.
I, too, grew up as a citizen of the Mushroom Kingdom. I enjoyed your Fox news comparison. I saw some neighbor kids playing this game at a New Years Party and it was all I could do not to wrench the controller from their hands to try it myself. (Had to be an adult and drink instead) I am anxious to play but worried I'll get frustrated. Still, I do love Mario...so much that I actually have Mario Party 8, but I don't play much because it's no fun alone.
I was playing with a friend awhile back and she was having trouble with simple level navigation. Once I picked up a Yoshi, I simply swallowed her and proceeded to bounce around the level with my usual surgical precision. She was SO pissed I wouldn't spit her out, but I got through the level, got the Big Coins, and she didn't die anymore.
This game is, IMHO, very frustrating when you get more than two people on the screen at the same time. I've heard so many woeful stories of almost-successful runs ruined because Mario jumped off Yellow Toad's head, Yellow Toad fell into a pit of death, and Luigi got sucked into the fog o' war. But it's fun if you enjoy games that empower you to ruin other people's lives. It's like Halo for the Wii, but without 12-year-olds swearing at you and sticking 'nades to your nuts even though you're on their team.
